Grade 8/9 Final Exam Review
Your English Final will cover general points of the course, not specifics such as novels or poems we have studied in class. However, all of the elements of the different units will be covered. Here is a list to help you study (this may not include everything so check your notes!):
novel and short story elements
allusion, antagonist, anticlimax, atmosphere, character, climax, conflict, crisis, denouement, dialect, dialogue, diction, dilemma, dynamic character, epiphany, flashback, foil, foreshadowing, irony, moral, narrative, plot, point of view, protagonist, satire, setting, suspense, symbol, theme
poetry elements
alliteration, allusion, ballad, blank verse, concrete poetry, diction, epic, epigram, epitaph, haiku, hyperbole, imagery, irony, lyric, metaphor, onomatopoeia, personification, repetition, rhyme, stanza, simile, sonnet, tone
grammar
noun, pronoun, adjective, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction, article
sentences, period, comma, quotation marks, capitals
Your exam will have 2 parts: a multiple choice and a written component. The multiple choice will cover all of the points above and include a short story and a poem to be read and that will have questions.
You will be asked to respond to a phrase or a question for your written component. Please try to write well balanced paragraphs (notice the plural). Remember, these are graded by other teachers on a 6 point scale.
Part of reviewing for your exam is creating notes for yourself. The act of writing out and organizing notes is actually a learning experience (believe it or not). It’s like practicing your brain just like you exercise for your muscles.
Use your time today to get organized and start reviewing for the final. You have all the notes you need to study from! Make some flash cards!
